Helvetica NeueвІ itself has been around , it was only in 2007 with the release of Apple’s first iPhone that it became widely associated as Apple’s UI typeface of choice for iOS.

UbuntuвІ typeface was developed by for, yes, the Ubuntu Linux OS. It was made fully public in late 2010 where it has , not only on the Ubuntu OS itself, but also via the directory.

Lucida GrandeвІ is the UI typeface of choice for Apple’s Mac OS X. Eerily based on byВPCharles BigelowВPandВPKris Holmes, Lucida Grande was further optimised for smaller point sizes and screen legibility. Strangely, Lucida Grande has never included italics.

SegoeвІ range of fonts used by Microsoft first saw the light on their Windows Vista OS and developed further for Windows 7 and the currently in-production Windows 8. Segoe UI was met with controversy as many type designers pointed out the similarities it held with the more world-famous .

In order to really understand what makes a good UI and screen-ready typeface, it’s best to start with what’s already out there, right now, and what is getting used.

I’ve briefly before on some typefaces that I consider to be particularly good for on-screen reading. But now I wish to delve further into this realm of typography and consider: What makes a typeface good for screens and UI design in particular?
